2. Rubber expansion joint in the cooling water pipe of a tanker
Multiple-arch rubber expansion joint in a DN 1100 cooling water pipe made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic on an LPG tanker.
The challenge: high lateral movement of 130 mm with simultaneous operating pressure of 8 bar.
Chosen expansion joint construction length 1140 mm. Factory pressure test of expansion joint at 40 bar. Three-fold safety against bursting at the end of service life calculated in accordance with Pressure Equipment Directive PED 97/23/EC. Chloroprene with Kevlar cord reinforcement inserts as the rubber material, since Chloroprene features particularly good resistance to oils and additives also ensure good flame resistance in furnaces. Steel rings calculated in accordance with PED 97/23/EC in the arch bottoms run over threaded rods to introduce movement evenly into the expansion joint bellow, thereby preventing uncontrolled deflection of the rubber bellow.
